Most people don’t think about probate until it’s forced upon them.

When someone passes, families expect grief. They don’t anticipate the administrative and legal burden that follows: forms, missing documents, court requirements, financial accounts, family coordination, and decisions that cannot wait. Probate can take more than a year and cost families tens of thousands of dollars. In the middle of grief, family members are suddenly responsible for understanding, organizing, and managing an entire financial estate.

Few moments demand trusted financial and legal guidance more.

The wealth management wedge

For over a year, I studied the wealth management industry and the ways AI could reshape it. I kept circling back to trust.

In this market, trust comes before the product. Clients rarely switch wealth managers once a relationship is established, making customer acquisition slow and expensive. There are no shortcuts. The next winning entrants will need a real reason to be present before major financial decisions are made.

Estate settlement is one of those reasons. We are at the start of the largest intergenerational wealth transfer in history, with roughly $84 trillion expected to change hands over the coming decades.

Assets are about to move, but the current process is antiquated, fragmented, and confusing. It’s historically handled by attorneys and reserved for institutions and higher-net-worth estates. This leaves many families with two unattractive options: go it alone or hire expensive legal help.

EverSettled stood out because it earns trust by helping families with the work already in front of them. Its relationship with customers begins with immediate value, not a sales pitch.

Emergence is proud to lead its $5M seed round, alongside Entrepreneurs First, Seedcamp, Bridge Ventures, Alumni Ventures, and several angel investors.

AI-native from the start

EverSettled is building an AI-native operating service for estate settlement, helping families navigate the admin that comes after a death. It guides users through probate, estate administration, and inheritance management with structured guidance, document support, family coordination, and more.

EverSettled squarely fits into a category that we call AI-Native Services: companies that own and deliver the outcome using AI at their core.

Historically, estate settlement has been regulated, high-stakes, and historically offline. EverSettled is changing that, and not by squeezing AI into an old service model. It’s taking on the full process and rebuilding it around AI.

AI also changes who this market can serve. The obvious place to build has always been the top 10%: larger estates, wills, trusts, high-touch support, and ultimately higher ROI. EverSettled is focused on the remaining 90%: families who still have assets to settle, but are priced out of meaningful support.

The customer has changed as well. Many people navigating probate today are in their 50s and 60s. They have spent their adult lives using modern technology, then find themselves stuck in a process that can feel closer to the DMV than the digital products they use every day.

The delicate middle

Estate settlement lives in a strange and difficult space. Families are discussing money, assets, responsibility, and loss all at the same time. One family member may be legally responsible. Another may feel left out. Another may be grieving differently. Everyone needs clarity on what to do next, which document matters, who needs to be involved, what can wait, and what cannot.

EverSettled’s core product is Sage, an AI assistant that guides executors and family members. Sage answers questions at 2am, simplifies forms, processes documents, and coordinates tasks. It’s trained to support the financial side of probate, but also the questions and family dynamics that surface when money, loss, and responsibility collide.

The product has to navigate a delicate line: when to keep asking for the information needed to move the process forward, and when to show up as support before another form gets filled out.

Work this sensitive requires a founding team that understands both the human stakes and the technical demands. Before writing a line of code, they spent months with families, fiduciaries, and paralegals to understand where the process breaks.

CEO Arum Kempster has lived the problem. She served as executor of her father’s estate, a process that took 27 months, and later handled her grandfather’s estate. She has felt the confusion, cost, and invisible labor of probate firsthand. She also brings rare context from work on national death policy and from growth and go-to-market roles at consumer startups.

When I met Arum, what stood out was the combination of lived experience, market insight, and intensity. She will walk through walls to make things happen.

CTO Jacob Effenberger brings the technical foundation. He has built and implemented AI in regulated, high-stakes industries, including defense and oil and gas, where accuracy and reliability matter. Estate settlement requires the same seriousness. The work involves sensitive legal, financial, and personal information. The system has to be useful, careful, and trustworthy from the beginning.

The trusted brand for what comes next

Together, Arum and Jacob are building the trusted brand families turn to when someone passes.

We’ve seen major consumer companies emerge to support key life stages like pregnancy, fertility, and menopause. Death is universal, yet there is no modern destination for families navigating the aftermath. That has left a void that EverSettled is looking to fill.

Settling an estate will never be simple. It comes with grief, responsibility, and decisions no one feels ready for. But it shouldn't leave families with only two options: go it alone, or pay for expensive help designed for the wealthiest estates.

That's the third path EverSettled is building: real support for everyday families, at the moment they need it most. Do it well, and you don't just fix probate, you become the name families remember, the one that showed up in the hardest weeks and earned the trust to help with everything that comes after.

That's the company Arum and Jacob set out to build. We're proud to be building it with them.
