Julie Bell

Board Partner

Julie Bell is an operator, investor, executive leader, and Board Partner at Emergence Capital, with more than two decades of experience helping companies and teams scale. Across venture capital, private equity, consulting, and operating roles, she has built a career around strengthening organizations, developing exceptional talent, and helping leaders navigate moments of growth, transition, and reinvention.

Through her board and advisory work, Julie works closely with founders, CEOs, and leadership teams on scaling and transforming organizations, building strong executive teams, navigating critical inflection points, and translating strategy into durable operating systems. She previously served as COO of Emergence, where she helped lead the firm’s operations, platform, talent, and community-building efforts during a period of significant growth, including work across firm infrastructure, talent, fundraising and investor relations, portfolio support, and broader venture ecosystem initiatives.

Julie began her career at Bain & Company and later returned to serve for four years as Bain Bay Area’s EVP of People and Operations and People Partner. Between her two stints at Bain, she spent over a decade in private equity and operating roles, including as an investor at JH Partners; Partner at San Francisco Equity Partners; interim CEO of Luxury Link; interim CFO of Tea Collection; and Chairman of MatchCo, a beauty technology company she helped launch and guide through its acquisition by Shiseido Co., Ltd.

Julie is deeply committed to developing the next generation of entrepreneurs, investors, and business leaders. In 2025, she began teaching Introduction to Venture Capital to UC Berkeley undergraduates at the Haas School of Business, combining practical investing frameworks with real-world lessons from working with founders, operators, and growth-stage companies.

Her connection to technology and entrepreneurship is personal. Julie immigrated to Silicon Valley from Tashkent, Uzbekistan, then part of the former Soviet Union, with her family when she was three years old. Her father was an early computer science pioneer, and growing up in an immigrant household shaped her belief in hard work, opportunity creation, and the power of technology to expand what is possible.

Julie is a frequent guest speaker and has long supported initiatives focused on women’s leadership, inclusion, education, and community. She graduated from the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business with a B.S. in General Management and earned her MBA from Harvard Business School. She lives in Piedmont, California, with her husband, two children, and deeply co-dependent Havanese, Javier. Outside of work, she enjoys cooking regional dishes from around the world, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
